People here, mainly property owners are loath to vote for tax increases & bonds to fund services like law enforcement, 911 call centers, upgrades to water/sewer systems & even volunteer fire departments. Not to mention illegal under state law non-state sanctioned/authorized militias which in some cases also participate in drug dealing and/or sale of weapons. They promptly jacked up the rent prices to levels that would fine in places w/ more industries -better paying jobs like LA, Seattle or Portland but were/are WAY to high for people here to afford (example there is an old motel that was converted into studio apartments that in 2007 rented for 175 a month, by 2009 they cost over 400, now they're almost 1000), plus State/Federal Offices closed & governmental investments in infrastructure/resources dried up thanks in part to GOP driven state legislative & congressional budget cuts.Įrgo a lot of peeps were depressed, unemployed, angry, alcoholism increased & then in comes profiteering groups like drug dealing members of the Aryan Nation who cultivated new recruits & got them to sell drugs like Meth which has had devastating consequences. Which prompted 'outsiders' (Vulture capitalist real estate investors) to come in and buy up foreclosed real estate. Then the Bush recession hit further exasperating business closures, job losses, foreclosures & bankruptcies. Our rep who had promised us he'd vote no on CAFTA because, it would cost the district jobs, turned around and voted yes after his party got a big donation from CAFTA supporters, w/in months of CAFTA passing plants/factories began to close, kicking their employees to the curb and leave the area/USA. Logging decreased, mills closed, people lost their jobs, the Percentage of timber sales revenues paid to counties decreased exponentially which left them w/ less money for things like schools. The economy was highly dependent on timber sales (logging) and the Federal government (mainly the US Forest service) was one of the largest employers along with state offices, wood mills, a sugar plant, bow (archery) company, cement plant, mines, family owned farms/ranches.Ī lot of things over the years have contributed to the increased crime & decline. It wasn't always this bad.Ģ0+ years ago, peeps were more likely be shot (for trespassing by ranchers) than burglarized and most folks never locked their house or car doors.
